WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

MEETING AT PAKOWHAI A most enjoyable afternoon was spent at the monthly meeting of the Pakowhai Women’s Institute, Mrs Whittington presiding over a good attendance of members. Mrs Brunton and Miss R. Howard were appointed delegates to attend the half-yearly conference which is to be held in Napier on April 24. Mrs H. R. Clark gave a very interesting talk on Waitangi, Mrs Clark being present on the occasion of the celebrations. A most amusing roll call, pealing an apple blind-folded, caused much merriment. The competition, best pot of apple jelly, was won by Mrs Isdalc, Miss Isdalc being second, and Mrs W. Fourncau third. A very dainty after noon tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs Peterson and Mrs Couch, and Misses Isdale, Boshier, J. Peterson and Nancy Couch. The singing of the National Anthem concluded a very happy afternoon. TIKOKINO GATHERING The April meeting of the Tikokino Women’s Institute was held on Wednesday in the Memorial Hall, Mrs Nicholls presided over a large attend-

nnce of members. Three new members were welcomed Mrs A. V. Nicholls was chosen ns delegate to attend the annual mooting of the Southern Hawke's Bay Federation at Otane. After tho business part of the meeting, great amusement was caused by “pot luck’’ speeches, members responding well, and many and varied were tho views expressed. Al) the speeches were impromptu and were drawn for. The competition for the month was the prettiest patch-work tea cosy and was won by Mrs Stowe, Miss D. Knapp being second. A dainty afternoon tea wns sorted by the hostesses, Mesdames Brassington, Eddy and Neilson. A gamn of musical pegs was won by Mrs Brassington. Tito singing of the National Anthem brought a pleasant meeting to a close.
