CITY MISSIONER STONED
Mr. Fielden-Taylor Abused By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, April 5. Three times during the past week the Rev. T. Fielden-Taylor, the Church of England’s city missioner at Wellington, has had stones thrown at him by men he had been compelled to turn away because the mission has long since reached the limit of its resources in providing meals and shelter. One caller hurled a stone at Mr Taylor as he stood at the front door of his residence. “Here you are, you , this will catch you,’’ the man ejaculated as Mr Taylor stepped inside and deflected the missile with the front door.
“The abuse I have been getting showered on me lately has been ghastly,’’ said Mr Taylor in an interview to-day. “The men simply don’t believe me when I say the mission has got no money. The position at present is that we cannot carry on more than a month unless we get at least £5OO from somewhere. We owe the bank £lOOO, the biggest overdraft we have ever had, and quite naturally we cannot get a bigger. If the mission is forced to close down the men’s shelters will have to close also, and will leave an average of 300 men a day without a meal.”
