RELIEF WORKS STRIKE

Mr. Rushworth Approves LONG LIST OF DEMANDS (By Telegraph-Press Association.) WHANGAREI, April 5. Married relief workers employed on the Land and Survey Department’s drainage works at Hikurangi swamp ceased work yesterday as a. protest against the conditions under which they were working. The allegations include inadequate shelter in wet weather, deduction for time lost by -wet weather, payment for their own transport to and from the job, no sick pay, no travelling time, non-payment of standard rate wages of 12/6 per day, which the men demand.

At a mass meeting to-day it was decided to remain out till the demands are met. Mr H. M. Rushworth, M.P., congratulated the men on having taken the plunge, though he had not urged them to take it. “I am not popular with the Government, but for what it is worth you have my moral support. I am with you."
