The weather was brilliantly fine and the attendance was good. The track was in fast order. The totalisator investments amounted to £21,610 (win £11,051, place £10,559), as against £16,390 last year. The total for the meeting was £53,396 10/-, compared with £43,887 10/- last year, an increase of £9509. Great Star and Cricket Bat were the first to show out, but going along the back Cough led from The Smuggler, Irish Lancer, Tout le Monde, Shatter, Great Star, Argentic and Ranelagh. The Smuggler led six furlongs from home, followed by Cough, Irish Lancer, Shatter, Tout le Monde, Argentic and Great Star. The leaders were tho same into the straight. In a close finish The Smuggler stayed on to beat Cough by a head, with Ranelagh a length away. Shatter was fourth. Time, 2.33 3-5. GIMCRACK HANDICAP Of £160; 6 furlongs. 1/1 REBEL STAR, 8.9 (L. J. Rebel Star and Tizzy were the first, to become prominent, and were followed on to the course proper by Quietly, Eupator, Scarlet Rambler and Wild Sky. Variant and Silver Ring were together entering the straight, but an the run home Silver Ring drew out and won by a length from Custodian, with The Masquerader a length away, and Variant half a length further back. Time, 1.25 1-5. TEMPLETON HANDICAP Of £250; 7 furlongs. 2/2 COPYIST, 7.12 (Russell) .. .. 1 1/1 Hurlinghm, 8.8 (R. Reed) .. .. 2 5/4 Metal Bird, 7.1 (Messervy) .. 3 Also ran: 3/3 Cranford 7.9, 4/5 Gaysome 7.8. Copyist turned into the straight first and was followed by Cranford, Hurlingham, Metal Bird and Gaysome. Copyist went on to win by two lengths from Hurlingham, with Metal Bird a length and a half away. Gaysome was fourth. Time, 1.25 4-5.
