SYDNEY CUP RACE

BROAD ARROW WINS EASILY LIMARCH FINISHES THIRD. EASTER PLATE TO QUEEN HELEN By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright SYDNEY, April 2. The Australian Jockey Club's autumn meeting was continued at Randwick to-day in. tine weather before an attendance of 53,000, the best lor many years. The track was slow but in good order. Golden Wings, on the strength of his excellent showing in the Doncaster Handicap, was warmly supported in the La Perouse Handicap, but failed to flatter his supporters at any stage of the race and finished at the roar of the field. New Zealanders were compensated in the next race when the Chief Ruler filly Queen Helen produced a brilliant finishing effort to capture the Easter Plate from Arachne, who performed well. The Sydney Cup winner, Broad Arrow, was ridden by E. Britt, who toured America with Winooka. He is owned by Air Walgett, a grazier, who races under the name of Al. Brooks. Broad Arrow has run consistently in important events this season, notably ■it the last Aletropolitnn and later at .lie anniversary meeting. He appeared to be well suited by to-day’s lightly heavy going and by Britt’s ■iandy weight. His victory was certainly not unexpected, .judging by his lastminute friends. Silver Scorn ran prominently in the Sydney Cup until a furlong from home. Peter Jackson was responsible for a most inglorious display. His jockey, Ellis, said after the race that Peter Jackson was never on the bit and pulled up slightly lame. Results:— LA PEROUSE HANDICAP. Of £650; 6 furlongs. The “'Herald,” commenting on Chatham’s Doncaster Handicap win, says: “There was no luck about it. Victory waited only at the end of a punishing, desperate finish, and then by the narrowest of margins. It was the reward of superb courage and exceptional stamina. “The New Zealander Golden Wings had made a most brilliant effort. Whittingham revealed unexpected tenacity. Rogilla was never in the race. “The St. Leger was a slovenly-run race until the straight was reached, Limarch wearing down Blixtcn in a stirring finish. “Silver Scorn in the Autumn Plate suffered several checks, and, all things considered, her effort was creditable.’Following are the results:—
