EARTHQUAKE INSURANCE
National Scheme Advocated LEVY ON FIRE PREMIUMS (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DANNEVIRKE, March 20. The Dannevirke Chamber of Commerce, after discussing earthquake hazards, passed a resolution recommending the Government to institute a national scheme of earthquake insurance by the provision of a small increase in tire insurance premiums It wa s contended that by levying a small percentage on all fire insurance premiums in tho Dominion a considerable sum could be raised yearly. If the Dominion was unfortunate enough to experience another severe ’quake the fund could be used to compensate people tor property losses, possibly saving many from ruin. The fund should soon assume large proportions, especially in the absence of ’quakes for some years. Comment was also made upon the “iniquitous practice" of insurance com panies which refused to meet claims en earthquake policies when 'the damage was under £5O
