72 PERISH IN CYCLONE
Luggers and Launches Sink BANANA GROWERS RUINED SYDNEY, March 16. A Cairns message states that the latest survey shows that 72 persons penshed as a result of luggers and launches being overwhelmed in the cyclone on Monday. Stories are arriving of ruination of farms in the far north beyond Cooktown. Banana plantations were completely demolished and every building wrecked. Five settlers at Almason are absolutely ruined. The sea rose to a height of 30 feet, compelling them to seek safety on higher ground.
