GENERAL NOTES

Answering a question recently in the House of Commons, Lieutenant-Colonel Headlanj said he aid not think there was sufficient evidence of injury to the health of drivers of motor vehicles or other users of the road from exhaust fumes to justify legislative action. Figures published by the Ministry of Transport reveal a substantial increase in the number of cars in use in England last year. For the 12 months ending November 30 the current licenses of cars taxed on horse-power are given as 1,093,389, compared with 1,014,026 for the same period in 1932, an increase of 79,363. Several what are termed “road registers” have been supplied for the Mersey Tunnel. They are placed on various roads which lead to the tunnel and any vehicle so heavy as to be liable to cause damage to the structure of the tunnel on passing over the register rings a bell and lights up a red lamp.
