RUGBY FOOTBALL

REPORT OF PIRATES CLUB. REVIEW OE LAST SEASON. The annual report of the Pirates Rugby Football Club is to be presented this evening at the annual meeting. The committee states: “In many ways the past season was most difficult, but on the other hand it was not without its successes. “Before club matches began, Napier was fortunate in having a visit from the Tukapa Club, New Plymouth. After an enjoyable game the visitors won by 24 to 3. The committee is very grateful to the Tukapa Club, as they came at very short notice. “The club entered one team in the senior, junior and third grades in the Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union’s competitions. Though our successes in the playing fields were not numerous, our teams at all times proved themselves worthy opponents. In the competition matches our seniors did not finish very high in their grade. Half way through the season this team lost, several players, but thanks to the efforts of Mr Young, and other clubs in Napier coming to our assistance we were able to carry on. Their record for the season reads: Matches played 3, won 3, drawn 3, lost 10. Points for 92, against 189. JUNIORS’ RECORD. The junior team should have had much better results, for during the season some very good games were played, and their style at times reached a high standard. The main reason for the failure was that members did not turn out to practice. Their record was. Matches 13, won 4, lost 9. Points lor 99, against 130. Ou the contrary the third grade team set an example to all members in so far as training was concerned* The thirds’ record in competition games was: Matches played 14, won 4, lost 9. Points for 43, against 155. “We take this opportunity of thanking the following gentlemen who gave up their time to coach the various teams: Messrs Tankard, Yates and Young (senior) N- A. McKenzie (junior), and H. Batchelor (third), and trust that in the coming season the club will be able to call upon their services again. “Our club did not contribute the usual number of players in the representative teams, and the club’s only representative in the Hawke’s 'Bay senior team was Ivan Charles. P. Thompson was selected to represent Hawke’s Bay in the colts touring team. In the Napier-Hastings team. Messis Charles and Thompson won places, and in the Hawke’s Bay junior representative team, Messrs S. McKenzie and .1 Hoes were selected Gilroy represented the club in the Napic thirds. “During the season each primary school team was placed under the care of ono of the Napier clubs and this club wa« responsible for the Intermediate School team. b.;t owing tn the

scheme coming into operation at the latter end of the season the club was not able to give the school the assistance that it would have liked to, and it was left to Mr B. Tweedie to look after the boys. THANKS TO DONORS. “We thank all donors who have contributed to the club's funds during tile year, to Messrs Kivell brothers and Mills tor the donation of a football, and to ex-members who donated the c(ub flag for the gymnasium. We again desire to record our appreciation to the members of the Ambulance Brigade for the services given during the season. We are deeply in debt to our physical instructor, and to the coaches of all grades for their valuable services. We also thank the active members of the club tor their loyal support, and lor their splendid conduct both on and off the field during the past season." THE CELTIC CLUB. ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report of the Celtic Rugby f ootball Club, to be presented at the annual general meeting this (Friday) evening, reads as follows:— The committee has pleasure in reporting that the 1933 season was a most successful one, and all teams gave very creditable performances. The senior team was successful in annexing the Hastings Sub-Union championship, and the juniors came second equal in their competition. The thirds greatly improved towards the end of the season, and the fourths came second in their grade. This result is highly satisfactory to all supporters of the club, and much credit is due to the coaches. The receipts from subscriptions were disappointing, and the number of donations received from supporters also showed a decrease, but this is not due to lack of enthusiasm or interest in the club, but to the present difficult times. The balance at the bank is now £6 5/-, and every effort must be made to keep the expenses as low as possible this coming season. We wish to thank the following gentlemen for their donations to the funds of the club : Rev. Father Stewart, Messrs H. M. Campbell, M.P., T. Donovan, H. B. Poppelwell, J, Joseph, J. Brown, and H. jlcKennie, and also Mr P. Higgins fur the donation of two medals.
