WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

WAIPAWA GROUP. A PROFITABLE YEAR. There was a very large attendance at the annual meeting of the Waipawa Women’s Institute. In moving the adoption of the report Mrs Bibby, president, congratulated the secretary on her excellent report, and also thanked the members for their unfailing loyalty and co-operation in all institute activities. Eight years had passed since the establishment of the Waipawa Institute, and all those years a most happy fellowship had reigned among the members, and the monthly meetings had been most delightful and friendly gatherings. The report of the year’s work showed that a great amount of useful work had been done, and that the institute had an educational and practical value an well as a social side. Next year they hoped to do more practical work for the community than before, and also hoped that by the end of the year Waipawa Institute would number 150 members. The balance-sheet, read by Mrs Preston, was adopted and. the treasurer was congratulated on her• clear and satisfactory statement of accounts which showed a small credit balance after all liabilities had been met. The following committee was elected by ballot:—Mesdames Adeane, Bibby, Furminger, Grcnside, Hill, Mason, Pratley, Preston, Sawyer, J. P. Walker, Misses d’Emden and Bibby. Mrs Bibby was re-elected president, and the resignation of Miss Jull as secretary was received with great regret. The March meeting being ‘‘potato day,” the members’ potato crop (grown from three tubers each) was brought in and weighed. Mrs H. Avison was the winner with ISJlbs., Mrs Bibby being runner-up with 141b5., and Mrs A. Logan and Mrs Wheeler tied for third place with 13jlbs. each. A roll call, ‘‘potato hints,” brought in some useful recipes for cooking, but one member/s advice to carry a raw potato in your pocket and so avoid rheumatism, was received with much laughter. An exhibition of members’ work brought in some beautiful baskets, soft toys, stools, etc. During the afternoon the special prize for the winner of most points in competitions throughout the year was presented to Mrs A. Logan amid, well deserved applause. A community sing led by Mrs Strang was very successful. Afternoon tea was served during the counting of the votes, the hostesses being Mesdames Dunn, snr., Fox. Harris, Drake, R. J. Pellow and Guy Taylor. A short committee meeting was held at the close of the meeting, at which Mrs D. Preston was elected secretary, and the date of the next committee meeting fixed for March 23.
