AUSTRALIAN ATHLETES
Metcalfe in Form 'By I’elegraph Press Association I WANGANUI, March 14. The trio of Australian athletes, Metcalfe, Hampson and Barwick, made their appearance at Cook’s Gardens track this evening before an attendance estimated at 3000. The visitors were accorded an enthusiastic reception, Metcalfe being accorded an ovation for his fine effort in the high jump, in which he cleared Oft. within half an inch of his New Zealand record. His sole opponent was the Fijian Vossalagi, who, in receipt of six inches, cleared sft. Gin. The broad jump saw Metcalfe again successful, the Australian recording 21ft. Sin. while he also won the shot putt, with a throw of 36ft. 6Jin., his nearest opponent, with a handicap of 21in., getting 36ft. Hampson won the first heat of tho 100 yards from Gillespie, to whom he conceded nine yards, but in the final Gillespie turned the tables, winning by inches in a great finish, with inches only separating the next two men. The final was run in even time. Hampson started in the final of the 220yds. handicap, which he won brilliantly in 22 1-5 from Strange (Palmerston North). Barwick, the Australian distance runner, caught his field in the mile handicap 500 yards from homo and held a five-yard lead with half a lap to go, but Collings, in receipt of 65 yds., finished full of running to wrest the lead elf the visitor 50yds. from tho tape and win narrowly, amid a scone of excitement. E. Lawrence, Palmerston North, won the two and three-mile cycle events, and finished second in the mile and third in the half-mile, off scratch in all events. Pahucrston defeated Wanganui in the relay race.
