WELLINGTON MEETING

STRONG FIELDS ENCAGED. A REVIEW OF THE RUNNERS. (By “The Barb.”) To-morrow and Saturday the Wellington Racing Club’s autumn meeting will be held at Trentham, where the best of the Dominion’s horses will be seen in action. Hawke’s Bay stables are not well represented. The following is a review pi the fields:—

There may be only a very few starters in this event. Colin terplay, Sir Simper, Dazzling Raid, Kindly Light, Melisande, de Forest and Limbohm are not likely to start, whilst Red Manfred is supposed to start in the Thompson Handicap, which carries a far bigger stake. The most likely starters will be Final Shot, Catalogue, Spiral, Palm Queen and Werohia. Should Red Manfred start he will be fancied on his G.N. Derby win. Spiral has not come up to expectations, but his third in the Wellington Cup counts a little in his favour. Catalogue, in recent racing, has fallen short of his summer form. Palm Queen, so far, is only up to hack class. Werohia may develop into a real stayer, as he has shown stamina in his races. Maybe the best backed will be Spiral, Catalogue and Werohia.

Knolimere, on Wanganui form, will not lack for support. Hazoor won well last Saturday. Pango is fair. Sam Smith ha s winning form, and goes well in this class of race. Te Ua also is na ideal sort for a highweight. Walton Park, after many tries, won at Dannevirke. Aesculus is not solid. Blacksmith disappointed at the last Wellington meeting. Heather Glow has to be considered. Nightguard appeals a little. Grand Blow may surprise. The most sought-after on the machine may be Knolimere, gam Smith and Hazoor.

Bay Area won at Blenheim. Bellbroney won twice at Napier. Bon Rapide may find seven furlongs too far. Calydon won well at Dannevirke. So far Dombey has been costly. Imperial Spear has a recent placing to his credit. LackstOn and Linoleum have no recent form. Quebec has yet to do it. Te Rangitutnatt is a possibility, Whetuma wa s third in a similar event last Trentham. Windward is due any day now. Ytlian wag third only in a highweight at Dannevirke. Red Rufus is one that will not be forgotten. Maybe the favourites on the machine will be Calydon, Windward and Red Rufus.

Burnish has recently demonstrated that she is good Synagogue, at Trentham last January, won a double, but disappointed greatly in the Middle Park Plate later at Riccarton. Variant, in the latter race, also let her connections down- Custodian, in the same event, surprised by winning from the above-named youngsters. Pin Money is only fair. Canopy is on the improve. Coronilia, on Napier form, does not enter into calculations. Morbury and Silly Owl have both won minor races. Limtilus and Choral have yet to show public form. Three that may appeal most are Variant, Burnish atyl Synagogue. THOMPSON HANDICAP. Of £600; 1 mile.

Autopay is such a brilliant miler that even with 9.5 he appeals. Cadland is fancied in many quarters. Golden Flair is also in the Flying Handicap, but the mile is supposed to bo her Trentham mission the first day. Cricket Bat has a nice weight for a horse of his performances. Red Manfred is not a good three-year-old in comparison to those of hig age of past seasons. True Shaft can never be left out of calculations. Argentic is again galloping well and may make amends for his inferior display when last at Wellington (January). Irish Lancer is a good galloper, although his form has been a little disappointing. Takakua commands respect. Epigram l won two one-mile races at the last Auckland Cup meeting in first-class company. Pomp has Won over a mile, but his form is so in and out that he cannot bo accepted as reliable. Miladi has rightful claims for recognition. Davolo is another tnree-year-old that appeals. Lordly Knight is brilliant, but maybe the eight furlongs will be too far for tlie Gisborne gelding. Red Sun looks like being the outsider. Out of the fifteen acceptors fourteen, on form, have gooff chahces. When the final figures on the tote are adjusted most money may he found invested on Epigram, Cricket Bat. Takakua and Golden HMr.

Lone Raider is also in the last race, but no matter what he contests he will be in the favourite division. Goiden Chant is a hack above the average when in form. Royal Amphora won on his last trip to Trentham, and is a brilliant hack. Blue Boy likes a mile much better. Pheon is useful. Normandy can, but seldom does he do his best in a race. April Fool must be considered. Prostration was a good 'un in the spring. Pladie is a recent winner Gay Seton has no recent form. Highgrader is a possibility. Sunny Maid is a doubtful runner. Cherry Queen has South Island winning form. Moatoa failed at Dannevirke. Pegged Exchange, on track work, appeals. Of i the remaining quartette Tycoon may appeal most. Lone Raider, Royal Amphora and Golden Chant may be the favourites. >_—— . . —

Golden Hair, if started, will be fancied as she won the A.R.C. Royal Stakes and Taranaki Stakes over this distance. Diatohious is a brilliant galloper, and won a double at the last Trentham meeting. Roya] Hunting is at his best, and before leaving here was responsible for an impressive sixfurlong gallop. Copyist is a possibility. Kerbside has the right form. Cranford has good form. Takakua is more likely to take on the Thompson Handicap. Sanguine King is a little out of his class. Good Hunting hag been disappointing in recent efforts. Lack has no form for some time. The favourites may be Diatomous, Royal Hunting and Kerbside. SILVERSTTiEAM HANDICAP. Of £200; 1 mile.

P Lone Raider, if started, will be sup--0 ported. Might won a double recently 0 at Blenheim, but the opposition was 0 weak. Round Table is sure to be one 1 of the fancied ones. Rust has the right form. Limbohm is an unlikely starter. Silver Sight has form, and won at the - last Dunedin meeting over this disi tance. Importance enters calculations. Taitom has been very consistent of o late. Ruri is not liked. Cleaner has .1 winning and consistent form. Senior .. needs to improve on Napier running, t Red Rufu s may prefer the Trial. Pladie e and Sibella have both won this last a week. Drumfire is overdue. Saltspray - has winning form. Of the remainder '. Gold Ruler looks about the best. The t ‘ favourites may be Taitoru, Silver Sight t ] and Saltgpray,
