H.B. AUTUMN SHOW

The Ladies’ Classes LARGE ENTRIES RECEIVED Vieing with the fruit classes in point of interest aud attractiveness to the general visitors are the home industry classes at the H.B. Show. To the male portion of the community the splendid display of bread, cakes, scones, preserves, etc., constitutes a very strong appeal. He is invariably frankly admiring and genuinely complimentary. The display is generally so uniformly good that the men folk are not disposed to be too critical. They compare the cookery insensibly with what their mothers used to make, and are lain to admit that the daughters are in no way inferior as lar as cooking is concerned. The judges, of course, whose duty it is to adjudicate upon the various exhibits, are m general terms disposed to be equally as complimentary as the average visitor to the show. Looking at the large list of entries in this section at this week’s show it seems certain that the exhibits will be quite up to the best of past years and oerhaps may be superior. The women’s section will be one of those most closely scrutinised, andi s likely to be oue of the best sections of the show. Hot water will be supplied free to picnic parties. A special train will leave Napier at 1.15 p.m., returning at 5.15 p.m. COMPETITION PROGRAMME Thu morning competition programme ■it the Hawke’s Bay autumn show on Thursday, is oue that well might attract any people who can possibly attend, particularly townsfolk, who will be afforded an opportunity of seeing forms of competition that seldom come under their notice. This in particular refers to the apple-packing competition which takes place at 10.30 a.m. The average person in town sees the remarkably evenly packed eases of fruit both in paper wrappings and without, the latter, of course, displaying even lines of rosy-hued fruit, but the swiftness and dexterity with which the packing is done, he has little idea. To see the competitors at work is to see a swiftness of manipulation that might almost be called sleight-of-hand, so quickly does a pyramid of apples disappear and a fully packed case of fruit makes it appearance. Another morn ing competition worth seeing is the dog trial. This too, is very interesting, though those who attend in the afternoon will be able to see the four leading dogs at work, for the four scoring the highest points in the morning are required to submit to a further trial in the afternoon, the prizes being allotted on the total points scored at both trials. The dancing competitions also start at 10.30 a.m.
