PAY CUT HARDSHIPS
U.S. Diplomatic Corps (Received 1, 12.40 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Jan. 31. A vivid description of the hardships suffered by diplomatic officers due to pay cuts and shrinkage in dollar value was placed before the Congressional Committee by the State Department when requesting an increase in the appropriat'.ons of the department. Cases reported included one of suicide, one of insanity, and general nervous breakdowns through actual lack of money for food. Threadbare clothes had to be worn, children were kept out of school, and other such deprivations among the corps were mentioned.
