WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

MEETING AT TAKAPAU CHILDREN’S AFTERNOON The monthly meeting of the Takapau Women’s Institute, over which the president (Mrs W. Jackson) presided, took the form of a children’s afternoon. The meeting was opened with the Institute Song. It was decided to hold a combined institute picnic on the third Thursday in January. After the formal business of the meeting was attended to the children present on an open invitation were entertained to afternoon tea, which was provided by the members. The children gave a short programme as follows:—Pianoforte solo, Madge Purcell; songs, senior girls; recitation, Malcolm McSporran; dialogues, infants; songs, junior girls; recitation, W. Foley. A very enjoyable afternoon for the guests and their elders was concluded by the singing of the National Anthem. ASHLEY CLINTON GROUP TALK ON MUSIC The Ashley Clinton Women’s Institute held its final meeting for the year on Thursday afternoon. Mrs Dampney presided. Members expressed sympathy with Miss Hunt in her recent loss, all standing in silence. The feature of tho afternoon was a talk on music and composers by Mrs Tennent, which was most interesting and was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. Mrs Tennent was accorded a very hearty vote of thanks. Mrs Dampney, accompanied by Mrs Tennent, delighted the members by rendering old songs. Mrs Tilly, of Takapau, and Mrs Perry, of Masterton, were guests for the afternoon. Miss Pedersen was enrolled as a new member. The flour bag competition was won by Mrs Hanna. A generous number of gifts were brought by members to be forwarded to St. Hilda's Home, Otane. A dainty afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Crump and Pedersen and Miss Wilson, followed by community singing. The nm.iing closed with the singing of the National Anthem.
