PRIZE-GIVING AND CONCERT

The St. Mattehw’s Sunday School annual prize-giving and concert was held in the hall and thoroughly enjoyed. The programme opened with the carol “Good King Wenceslas’' Bung by Cara Steir, Nellie Atkins, William Tucker, John Mortimer-Jones, and Alfred Soppitt. Songs were given by Jean Millson and Audrey Aiderman; piano solo. Mary Mackersey; and recitation, Richard Burton. Then followed a beautifully staged Nativity Play which the children portrayed with great reverence. The scene was by the Well of Bethlehem and the children who took part were each dressed in a costume suitable to the time, making a wonderful representation of an Eastern story. The children had been trained by Miss O’Kane and Miss Millson and Deaconess Holmes had arranged the Eastern apparel. Those taking part were: Naomi, Ngaire Heaton; Rachael, Kathleen Bellerby; Ruth, Phyllis Payne; Reuben, Alfred Soppitt: Dan, William Tucker; Ben, John Mortimer-Jones; Miriam, Audrey Leathes; children, John Mackersey, Sydney Atkins, Richard Burton, John Curtis, Sally McVay; tableau: Virgin Mary, Jean Millson; St. Joseph, Robert Taylor; Three Kings, George Haldane, Graham Rainne, Eric Goodall; Angels, Kathleen and Shirley Giffney; Shepherds, Hartley Hatherall and Vic Watkins.
