YOUTH CONSCRIPTION
Interesting American Idea THEORY HIGHLY DEBATABLE (Received 4, 1.45 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Nov. 8. A plan whereby youth would supply the necessaries of life while older persons play, or work for luxuries, elicited the interest of Mrs Roosevelt and the secretary for Labour, Miss Perkins. The 71-year-old Mrs Prestonia Martin, the wife of a college professor, sponsored the plan, whereby all th* able bodied youth of both sexes nged from 18 to 26 would ho conscripted into a class of "commons” who would grow and process food and run the nation’s transportation and basic industries. After reaching 26 years the commoner would be come a member of "capital” and necessaries would then be provided him, but he must work for luxuries «nch ns automobiles, furs, caviar, etc. Mrs Roosevelt’s reaction was: "It is a really interesting new suggestion.” Miss Perkins says: "The theories are interesting hut highly debatable.”
