PARKVALE SWIMMING CLUB

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETINC. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The first annual meeting of the Parkvale Swimming Club was held in the school last evening. Mr H. S. B. Bibbands presided over an attendance of 15 members. The following are the main items from the report and balance sheet of the year’s activities presented by the chairman : — Gate receipts amounted to £37 10/8, representing a very large number of Id and 3d swims, while season tickets were taken out to the value of £l3 14/6. Total receipts from all sources were £5B 9/3 and the surplus for the season, after paying a caretaker during eight weeks of the summer holidays, was £33 19/8. The whole of this latter amount was paid to reduce the building account of £ll6. The club having devoted all its energies towards liquidation of its bath building account, neglected its competitive swimming activities, and it is hoped that the incoming committee may be able to awaken interest therein as good material is to he found among the junior members. However, tho headmaster of the Parkvale School, Mr Roe, reported that owing t» tho club’s interest the school was again able to win the Hawke’s Bay Education Board’s inter-primary school challenge shield. Mr Robert Harding had kindly presented a challenge shield to be held by the Hastings primary school having the highest percentage of children able to swim, and Parkvale camo out on top with an average of 31 per cent. It will be one of the chib’s chief endeavours, with the assistance of the school staff, to raise this percentage. The club desires to thank its many supporters for assistance, financial and material, in particular Messrs R. Paynter, W. Anderson, F. Mardon, R. Mul-e-aster. W. Robertson. J. Stickland, R. Walker, L. Liley. A. Fear and the club members who sacrificed so much of their leisure time to take turns on tho gate; also the school committee lor allowing so much freedom in carrying out the bath construction plans, and the teaching staff, who were always ready with co-operation. Tho valuable services of Mr W. Phipps, tho secretary, were lost early in the season, but the duties, combined with that of treasurer, have been ably carried out. by Mr Alan Mulcaster. The club roll at the end of the season was 66. The report and balance sheet were adopted. I'lie following officers were elected: Patron, Mr It Harding; president.
