MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS
IN ENGLAND AND WALES. LABOUR GAINS MANY SEATS. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright LONDON, November 2. Municipal elections in over 300 cities and boroughs in England and Wales are being held. The latest results show the position to be as follows:—
Labour so far has secured control only at Barnsley, Wallsend, Swansea, Oldham and Sheffield, having lost the latter last year. Considerable gains have been obtained at Burnley, Derby, Bolton, Sunderland, Salford, Bootle. Those defeated at Manchester include Lady Simon and Lord Stanley. Mr Herbert Smith, the miners’ leader, was defeated at Barnsley. The “Manchester Guardian’’ says that the swing to Labour in the municipal elections is stronger than anticipated, being especially marked in Yorkshire and the north-east, which confirms the view that the East Fulham by-election result was no flash in the pan. The “Daily Herald’’ declares that electors struck a blow for better housing and social services.
