ANTARCTIC EXPEDITIONS

DOMINION SOCIETY FORMED SUGGESTED OBJECTIVES By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, Nov. 2. The inaugural meeting of tho New Zealand Antarctic Society to-night was largely attended. The chairman (Mr A. Leigh Hunt) suggested that in addition to interesting itself in the natural history of the Antarctic and in expeditions thereto the society should endeavour to secure for the Dominion Scott’s old ship the Discovery as an ocean-survey and training ship and a relief vessel for any southern expedition. He stated that tho Discovery was owned by the Falkland Isles Government, which now had no further use for her, and that she was lying idle at Dead Man’s Berth, London. It was next suggested that the society should advocate tho establishment of meteorological stations in southern lands. Mr Hunt stated that Africa, Australia, New Zsaland and South America might all contribute to the cost of these stations, which would enable early forecasts of weather to be made.

Officers for the society were elected as follow: Patrons, Sir Douglas Mawson, Rear-Admiral Byrd, and Admiral Evans; vice-patrons, the Rt. Hon. G W. Forbes, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, Sir Frederick Chapman and Sir Joseph Kinsey; president, Mr Justice Ostler; vice-presidents, Mrs Ferrar, Mr R. Simmers and Mr R. A. Falla; council, Messrs W. B. Oliver, A. A. Kirk, F.
