NAPIER MARINE PARADE

Ornamental Bay and Rotunda CONFERENCE THIS MORNING The proposals to erect a semi-circular ornamental bay and a band rotunda with glass-in wings on the Marine Parade foreshore, Napier, are to be finally considered by a committee representing the Napier Thirty Thousand Club, the Napier Retailers’ Association and the Carnival Committee. This committee, which has been given power to act, will meet at 4 o’clock next Tuesday afternoon. A conference of representatives of the three bodies was held this morning, the Mayor (Mr C. 0. Morse) occupying the chair. While everyone agreed that the erection of the semi-circular bay, complete with a roofed walk with glassed-in walls, would be an asset to the foreshore, there was some opposition to the erection of the two wings of the band rotunda, on the grounds that the view of the sea from the parade would be obstructed.

It was explained that the construction of the bay would cost in the vicinity of £l2OO. All bodies interested in the scheme were prepared to contribute to the cost, providing some mutually agreeable scheme was finalised.

With regard to the wings of the band rotunda, Mr R. C. Wright pointed out that these were necessary for the purpose of proper sound production. Bandmasters had informed him that bands disliked playing in open rotundas, and as every effort should be made to attract the public to the Marine Parade to listen to band concerts, the wings should be incorporated in the scheme. He did not think the view of the sea would be obstructed, as the walls of the wings would be of glass. After further discussion regarding the merits of the wings, the conference agreed to the matter being finalised by a committee, which was elected as follows:—Napier Thirty Thousand Club, Messrs R. C. Wright, L. Pickering and W. Harvey; Napier Retailers’ Association, Messrs. R. J. Dockery, E. Hyde and P. W. Peters; Napier Carnival Committee, Messrs. M. S. Spence, Haskall, Anderson and T. B. Ferguson.

Mr. W. Harvey expressed the view that the public of Napier was asking for improvements on the lines of those suggested to the conference. He thought that the scheme should be commenced without delay. He wanted it to be the commencement of a major scheme of Marine Parade improvement.

Mr. A. B. Hurst was in favour of tennis courts being incorporated in the scheme. This suggestion met with the approval of the conference and the possibilities of laying down four courts

is to be considered by the committee appointed when it meets on Tuesday
