APPALLING FLOODS
TRAGEDY IN CHINA 1,500,000 PEOPLE INVOLVED. MANY TOWNS EVACUATED. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Received 18, 11.50 a.m.) PEKING, Aug. 17. “China’s sorrow” — the Yellow river—has flooded over 2000 square miles of the province of Shantung. A foreign expert returning herefrom the scene of the disaster reports that 1,500,000 people are affected; the loss of life is small owing to ample warning. Several towns have been completely evacuated by the populuec and others, including prisoners in the gaols, took refuge on the mediaeval walls. Everywhere dykes are being feverishly strengthened. The gates of some cities have been barricaded with sandbags. Tho river is now falling.
