Reference to numerous necessitous cases in Gisborne was made at a meeting of the Cook Hospital Board yesterday, the chairman (Mr M. R. Trafford) stating that a deputation of 50 men had waited on tho board intimating that they were absolutely destitute on account of unemployment. The board was not giving work in stand-down weeks, which in Gisborne is every alternate week. These men, stated tho chairman, were only allowed to earn an average of 19'9 nwcek for a married man nnd 9/- a week for a single man. After a discussion it was decided to send a telegram to the Minister of Employment urging that nn allocation be made to Gisborne so that relief men will receive at least one day’s work in stand-down weeks, as the Hospital Board cannot accept the responsibility of those men, no provision being made io tho estimates for fit men.—Press Asbociation.
