Just before the professional bout commenced challenges against the winner were received from Gus Fitzmaurice and C. Purdy, of Wellington. The amateur bouts staged were of first-class standard, the Waipukurau boys giving good exhibitions against their more experienced opponents. The Hastings contingent won six of the seven inter-district bouts. The officials for the evening were: Judges, Messrs. Newbigiu, Gray and .1. Dexter; announcer, Mr H. G. Apperly; time-keepers, Messrs A. H. Herbert and’E. Little. ROUND BY ROUND. Robertson then connected with two straight right-handers, following it with a left and right to the body, Griffin smothering up. Robertson peppered home lefts and rights to the stomach, and got rather an easy round. Round 5: Both men came in, Griffin scoring with his left and Robertson retaliating with a right cross to the stomach, which caused Griffin to hang on. Robertson pushed out a left swing, pushing Griffin to the ropes, the latter cleverly evading another coming back off the ropes. Round 6: Griffin connected with a straight left, Robertson coming in with a right cross to the heart. Both scored with a right swing, Robertson stopping a left hook to the stomach. Griffin took several punches on his arms, and connected with a right uppercut. The Gisborne boy scored with a right-hander, Griffin coming back with a couple of lefts.— This round was if anything in favour of Griffin. AN EVEN BOUND. Round 7: Coming out from his corner Griffin connected again with two straight lefts, Robertson scoring with his right in the stomach and heart. Griffin ducked a nice right-hander, but stopped a couple in the face, and one to the heart. Robertson got home a right hook using his weight rather than his gloves.—An even round, Griffin making free use of the smother. Round 8; Robertson came out with a stinging straight right, straight left and a right to the face and body, following it up with another right cross to the stomach. Griffin made use of his left, and ducking quickly, caused his opponent to miss. Both exchanged punches in the corner, Griffin taking a lot on his gloves and scoring again with his left in the in-fighting.— Griffin’s round, with Robertson ahead on points. Round 9: Robertson came out fighting, Griffin taking refuge in a smother and stepping back to box. Griffin slammed out a straight left to the body, Robertson using his right to good effect peppering Griffin’s ribs, stomach and face. Griffin used his left to good advantage, getting home to the face. Robertson’s right caused Griffin a lot of bother, but the Takapau man took them well and stopped a lot of punishment. The final round opened with Robertson coming in for fight, swinging a bit freely. Griffin landed five straight lefts in succession and got home good short arm jabs in the clinches. Robertson walked into a left to the jaw, but came back with a right hook and right cross. Both mixed it freely, Robertson pushing his opponent round the ring. They exchanged straight lefts, Robertson missing a lot. This was Griffin’s round. Tho crowd took exception to one of Robertson’s punches, which landed on the back of Griffin’s neck. Robertson secured the verdict on points. Griffin put up a game fight against heavy odds for a comparatively young fighter, and was giving away a stone in weight. THE AMATEURS. The amateur bouts resulted as follow: — Morton (Waipukurau) 7.2, v. P. Lowe (Hastings) 7.3.—Lowe showing a knowledge of the finer points of the game beat Morton by strong straight lefts and body punches. P. Abbott (Waipukurau) 6.1, v. J. Dounolly (Hastings) 6.8. — Both boys showed clever boxing and gave a good exhibition, with Donnelly just a bit ahead on attack and defence to win. S. Bryce (Waipukurau) 6.6, v. J. Gray (Hastings) 6.3. — A very even bout, Gray’s peculiar style disconcerting his opponent. His long, strong swinging blows won him tho verdict. K. Morton (Waipukurau) 5.12, v. R i Walker (Waipawa) 6.l—Walker began strongly, Morton defending well throughout. Walker gained the verdict. P. Bowling (Waipawa) 5.10, v. J. Hall (Waipukurau) 6.lo.—Bowling, though conceding a stone ia weight, did all the

agressive word, winning all rounds in good style. T. Gibson (Waipukurau) 10.4, v. M. Ashman (Hastings) 10.2.—Gibson lacked sufficient knowledge of defence and fell a victim to many of Ashman’s straight lefts. The latter’s untiring head and body blows soon had Gibson very groggy. Ashman won easily. D. Mclnnes (Hastings) 9.6, v. A Smales (Waipukurau) 8.6. — This bout opened up smartly, Mclnnes going for the in-fighting, in which department Smales proved too smart. Both clinched repeatedly, Mclnnes being warned for this. Both were inclined to swing with the open glove. The final round won the verdict for Mclnnes, who scored freely with both hands. Hargreaves (Hastings) 8.10, v. Blake (Hastings) B.7.—Neither of these two were very willing to mix it, Hargreaves scoring in the clinches, and was inclined to fight with his head down. Blake’s punches wcro straight, but lacked sting. A quiet affair in which the decision was a draw. Wyllie (Hastings) 9.10, v. Rush (Elsthorpe) 9.lo.—Wyllie had the longer reach and scored freely in the open, whilst Rush, landing some vicious punches, scored in the in-fighting.
