HASTINGS WEST SCHOOL

ENJOYABLE CONCERT. The success which attended the Hastings West School concert given last evening was very gratifying to everyone concerned, an d the school funds have been considerably augmented as a result. The large hall, provided byconverting three class-rooms into one for the occasion, was packed to the walls. A fine programme of interesting and entertaining items delighted the audience, which showed appreciation iu loud applause. The school pupils acquitted themselves well, and their performance reflected great credit on the teaching staff. Action songs in costume were given by girls in Standard 1., and boys in Standards I. and 111., and also the infants’ class; and in Japanese costume by Standards V. and VI. girls; a dialogue (“Berghers of Calais”) by Standard IV. pupils; folk-dancing by girls in Standard IV.; dance iq soldiers’ costume by Standard 11. pupils, and a recitation by a Standard 111 pupil; a humorous sketch “Barnacle Bill” was given by Messrs. Kitt, Mollison and May; songs by Miss Dorothy Robinson and Miss M. Penman; a tenor solo by Mr. Piper; elocutionary items by Miss Sisson and Master Donald Davies; dances were performed by Miss Shapleski’s pupils, to bagpipe music; Messrs. Le Compte and Culver amused the audience with their droll antics; while the Maori party from Kohupatiki were a host in them selves, and contributed part songs and hakas. Mr. S. J. McKee (chairman of committee) expressed thanks to the performers and the audience for their practical interest in the school, and announced that another concert would be put on at a later date.
