REVOLVER SHOT AT GARAGE PROPRIETOR WOUNDED. SEARCH FOR THE ASSAILANT. By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, April 15. The motorist, driving a baby car, obtained petrol and attempted to drive an ay without paying bales imupeu on the running boaiu and the ear was stopped. The drivel alighted auu i» reported to have said. “1 am des perate; 1 haven’t any money. Dates retorted: •‘That’s no good to me. Whereupon the motorist drew a revolver and hred twice Dates retreated and it I* believed the motorist drove on southward. This morning it was reported that a car which had been stolen from Auckland had been found abandoned near Ngaruawahia, and a large force ol detectives and police ale searching lor the driver. Bates, aged 19 and married, is now id the Auckland Hospital His condition is satislaetory. Later; A baby cat answering the description of the vehicle driven by the man concerned was recovered at Ngaruawahia, 30 miles south ol Mercer, at midnight last night. The police describe the wanted man as youngish, of slight to medium build, oft. 7ins., dark hair, wearing a dark grey suit and white shirt with dark atripe, sand shoes, uo collar or hat. In connection with the shooting at Mercer the police are seeking a young man whom they describe as follows:— Age 19 years, height sft. bins., cleanshaven, dark, slaty blue suit, white shirt with dark stripe, white sand-shoes nearly new. Prior to undergoing an operation for the extraction of the bullet. Bates was interviewed by a detective, to whom he made a full statement of the shooting. The X-ray reveals that the bullet entered through the right thigh, narrowly missing tho bladder and the main artery, and is embedded near the pelvis.
