LA MODERNS’S N.Z. RECORD. AUTOPAY’S THOMPSON. Wellington, March 17. The Wellington Racing Club’s autumn meeting opened at Trentham in brilliant weather. The track was hard and fast, and the attendance was large. There were exceptionally keen racing and close finishes. The totalisator handled £28,994, an increase of £10,743 on the corresponding day last year. La Moderne’s time in the St. Leger Stakes was a New Zealand record. Autopay’s Thompson Handicap time equals the race record. There was an inquiry into alleged interference by Dole with F racas in the straight in the two-year-old race, but no action was taken. Dole, which was always prominent, led into the straight with Diatomous and took charge over the last two furlongs. Fracas came on the rails but recevied a check, Dole winning by a length and a half, with Golden Hair two lengths away. Diatomous was fourth and Guarantee was next. Time, Lili. THOMPSON HANDICAP. Autopay put up a phenomenal performance. Moved back at the start to last by two or three lengths, Autopay was unsighted until the straight, where it came with a brilliant run to catch and head-off the pacemaker, Bayaere. The Tiger and Lordly Knight were prominent to the straight from Golden Wings, Pomp and Kerbside.
