WAR HERO SHOT DEAD

V.C. WHO CAUGHT 25 GERMANS. While being taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary suffering from wounds caused by a rifle, Sergeant John Brunton Daykins, V.C., died at Jedburgh, Roxburghshire. Sergeant Daykins, who was 49 years of age, was found unconscious at his home, Howden Farmhouse, near Jedburgh. He had been using the rifle and it is believed that it went off accidentally. He had been suffering from influenza, but had recovered. The dead man's V.C. was obtained for gallantry at Solesmes, when, singlehanded, he captured a strong German outpost, returning to his platoon driving 25 of the enemy before him and carrying a machine gun on his Shoulder. After the war he received the freedom of Jedburgh and a presentation from the townspeople.
