SWIMMING
SPEEDY AUSTRALIANS. CAPABILITIES SHOWN AT GISBORNE. By Telegraph—Press Association Gisborne, March 17. At a carnival last night the visiting team of swimmers, the four Australians, left no doubt as to their capabilities. In the 150 yards handicap V. Bcsomo conceded as much as 19 seconds but had no difficulty iu winning by five yards. His time for the distance I would have been considerably faster I had he been extended. In the 50 yards handicap C. Phillips swain a fast race , to win in 25 l-ssecs. This event was won only over the last few yards, which Phillips covered with a great burst of speed to till first place by a touch. Another fast race was the 100 yards handicap, won by Owen Griffiths in 59 l-ssecs. Conceding N. Maddox five seconds, Griffiths fought out a close finish with the Gisborne swimmer and won by a touch. F. Grif- j fiths put up a good performance in the other 50 yards event and. although I registering slower time than Phillips for the same distance, was not extend- i ed over the last 15 yards, winning by ‘ three yards. HERETAUNGA CARNIVAL TONIGHT. To-night will bo the final club night of the season wheu the following events will be decided:—Boys’ race, 50 tds.; girls’ race, 25yds.; ladies’ race, 50yds.; open race, 50yds.; consolation handicap, 50yds. (for those nhu have not won a race this season): open diving; B grade diving; novelty; teams’ race. In addition, there will be a swim-off over 100yds. between E. Doggett an.] J. Herriek to decide ‘lie winner of the Stii.-kland rind Bryant Cup. To decide the teams’ race Gobi Diamonds there will also bo a swim off between Fliers (Macdougall, E. West, F. West) and Girls (J. Mac Kay, J. Batt, 1. Mac Kay).
