HASTINGS BOROUGH

MEETIhG of the council. GENERAL BUSINESS. The usual fortnightly meeting of the Hastings Borough Council was held last evening, His Worship the Mayor, Mr G. F. Roach, presiding over Councillors R. Henderson (deputy-Mayor), T. Donovan, J. Simmons, P. Loach, Graham McCormick, F. E. Smith, C. H. Slater, and R. Baker. Councillor P. M. Cohr was granted leave of absence. The following petitions were received and dealt with:— la connection with a petition for work to be done to the footpath in McLean street from the corner of Heretaunga street, on the east side, the engineer estimated the cost of carrying out the work asked for at £126.—1t was decided to defer the request for consideration with next year’s estimates. With reference to a petition for the surfacing of Beresford street, it was decided to refer the matter to the incoming council to consider with the next financial year’s estimates.

The Hastings West School Committee applied for a reduction in the charge lor water supplied to their baths. The present, charge is £lO for six months lor 13 fillings, and any quantity over 13 fillings is charged for at the rate of Id per 1000 gallons.—lt was decided that in view of the fact that the charge made is approximately the cost to the council for pumping the water, no reduction be made in the charges.

Six reiiidents of Churchill street petitioned for the erection of a street lamp in that street midway between Riverslea and Park roads, and it was decided that the request be held over for consideration when the electrical engineer brings down his next list of street lamps to he erected. The Plunket Society applied for a slight addition to the Plunket rooms at the Women's Rest as the accommodation is 100 small, and the verandah i ■" 10-eii to ihe southerly winds that .ho workers have suffered rather

severely in consequence. The suggestion was that the verandah should be lengthened to the end of the building m order to provide more cupboard room, and enclosed with sliding glass windows.—lt was decided that the work as applied for be carried out, and that tenders be called by advertisement. It was decided also to seek the County Council’s financial assistance in carrying out the work. The Under-Secretary, Department of Public Works, wrote that the position at the present time is that the Building Construction Bill was drafted with a view to enabling further work to be done, but unfortunately has not yet been enacted. Consequently the department had no authority to put in hand the preparation of general regulations. —The meeting decided to “receive’’the letter, and to write regretting that the department had allowed two years to elapse without preparing the regulations that were promised immediately after the earthquake, which regulations would be of great advantage to the local authorities throughout the Dominion.

Petition by 231 ratepayers and residents, asking for the permanent sealing of Tomoana road and Frederick street, and submitting numerous reasons in support of their petition.— The engineer reported that the work would cost about £5OOO, and it was decided to refer the matter to the incoming council for consideration with next year’s estimates. The. Mayor and several councillors agreed that the road was most important, and that it should be surfaced right along. The matter could not, however, be considered as a part of work to be carried out during the present financial year.
