PUKEORA SANATORIUM

QUESTION OF CONTROL. WAIPAWA BOARD’S DECISION. (By Our Special Representative). At yesterday’s monthly meeting of the Waipawa Hospital Board a letter was received from the Director-General of Health stating that arising out of the recent Economy Commission’& rc-

port, control of sanatoria should not be the function of the Health Department, but were a function of hospital boards. Continuing, the letter stated that South Island sanatoria were already controlled by hospital boards, whilst the Palmerston North Board had recently assumed control of the Otaki Sanatorium for females. Pukeora was the only one remaining and the Waipawa Board was asked to assume control of this institution. The board went into committee and discussed the question at length. It was afterwards announced that it was prepared to enter into negotiations with the department concerning the assumption of the control of Pukeora Sanatorium. A preliminary investigating committee was set up, consisting of Messrs AV. H. Rathbone (chairman of the board), H. A. Fraser, H. W. AVhite, N. G. Hawthorn, T. P. Hunter, and the secretary (Mr I’. 11, Smyrk).
