The Commissioner for Napier (Mr .1. S. Barton) is well pleased with the response made by Napier ratepayers, who since the beginning of the financial year had up till February 28 contributed over £64.000 to the borough coffers. It, should be pointed out that tho whole of this sum did not relate entirely to rates due last year, but in a number of instances to rates overdue from previous years. Mr Barton observed that of the £58.000 rates levied last year £50,000 had till now been collected, leaving a comparatively small balance, and an indication of the result of impressing quietly upon the people the need for payment of rates. They had realised there was no hope of the Government’s finding the money, or of any rebates being granted, he added, ■ar s —
