WAIPUKURAU

NEWS AND NOTES. (Special Representative.) The Waipukurau Machine Gun section of the Wellington East Coast Mounted Rifles went into camp over the week-end at Mt. Vernon. Tho men received practical instruction in various phases of machine gun work, carrying out night and day shooting. Several qualified and a number were awarded their marksmen badges. The officers in camp were Captain Johnson, of Napier, Lieut. H. MaeCauley (Elsthorpo), and Lieut. J. Bell (Waipukurau). Sergeant-Major W. Fisher, W.0.1., of Napier, acted as instructor. The Waipukurau D.H.S. cricket team completed its match against Otano on Saturday when it won by an innings and six runs. Otano in their first innings made 98 and were dismissed for the same total in their second innings, in which Trevena made 21 runs and Oram 26. Bowling for school, Smith collected three wickets for 17 runs. In a match at Russell Park against a team from the 17th Battery, Waipukurau Old Boys secured a victory on the first innings. The battery’s first inning’s total was 88 runs, of which

Wilde made 43 not out. In reply Old Boys knocked up 112. A Siu ales 47 and W. Monteith 28. Battery made (»5 in the second innings, Wilde again coming to light, this time with 30 runs. Bowling for Old Boys, A Smales put up a good performance, taking four wickets for one run.
