CIVIL SERVICE MATCH NAPIER v. HASTINGS There was a largo attendance of civil servants at tho Hastings green on Saturday afternoon, when teams from Napier and Hastings met in a friendly contest. Before play commenced Mr Barlow addressed the members and explained that this year it had been decided to organise the public servants and arrange a day when tho could meet, fraternize and play a friendly game. In order to have something worth playing for and a record of games a shield had been procured, on which the names of the winners would bo inscribed. Mi Barlow considered, however, that tho shield was not the main idea of the gathering, the primary object being to enable members-, active and retired, to meet, mingle anil rub shoulders and exchange ideas and thus derive mutual benefit and enjoyment. It was hoped in future to play two matches each year. The Hastings club had kindly put their smaller green at the visitors’ disposal, and a very enjoyable afternoon’s play took place.
