HAVELOCK NORTH

TOWN BOARD MEETING. The usual monthly meeting of tha Havelock North Town Board was held last evening, there being present Messrs H. R. von Dadelszen (chairman), J. J. Nimon, E. C. Stratton, A. Christie, W, Paton, A. Toop and A. Greenwood. The honorary secretary of the Parkvale Golf Club wrote in reply to the board’s letter in regard to the removal of soil from the new stock road in the board’s area, wherein the board requested the payment of 30/- the value of soil removed. The secretary pointed out that permission had been granted by Mr Puflett of the country council to remove soil from the road leading from St. George’s road, but a mistake had been made in regard to the location when the soil was removed. The secretary requested the board, in view of the misunderstanding and also that permission had always been sought when soil was required, to waive the claim. — The explanation given was accepted by the board, and it was decided to let the matter drop. The Post and Telegraph Department, Napier, in replying to the board’s further letter in regard to the installation of a public telephone stated that it was regretted that funds were not available at present for this purpose, and in the circumstances the proposal could not be given favourable consideration. —It was suggested by the clerk that the board approach the member for the district in regard to the matter, and it was left in his hands to do this. The Hastings Borough Council wrote confirming the suggestion to extend the agreement for the supply of water for a further period of five years from October 1, 1932.—Received. ROADS COMMITTEE. The following recommendations were made by the roads committee: — “That water tables on all roads be cleaned in readiness for winter rains. “That the work of kerbing and channelling Te Mata road to the public school be commenced. “That tho clerk bo authorised to remove black soil from Stock road to the domain. “That arrangements be made for a power grader to scarify and re-grade Simla avenue, Fitzroy road, and other roads of which we have advised the clerk. “We ask that our action in putting in hand the work of widening Fitzroy road, be approved. “Most corners require attention, but it is useless trying to make them stand up to traffic in this weather; we have issued instructions to have them picked down at the earliest opportunity,, “Until the board sec its way to seal the comers, we will always have this

trouble, and we suggest that an estimate be prepared of the cost per chain of doing this work.—The recommendations were adopted, CLERK’S REPORT. Roads: All filling work in the vicinity of the cemetery has been completed; the corner of Tanner and I’ufflett roads has been raised. One gang of men is now engaged on raising the road near the small bridge in Tanner street. The work of widening Fitzroy road is well forward and when completed should be a boon to all residents in that locality. Grading has been done where possible and corners will be picked dow-n as soon as the weather is favourable.

Rubbish dump: People are again dumping rotten fruit and decaying vegetable matter on the Lucknow road dump, while others will persist in dumping rubbish which could easily be burned. We are at present covering the rubbish and deepening the dump itself; this should give dumping space for another two years. With a view to controlling tho dump I would suggest that a gate be erected on tho fence line, and that it be locked and the key kept at the office; we would then know who was using the dump and the class of rubbish each individual was depositing.—The report was adopted. Footpaths: The paths in Chambers. Campbell and upper Lucknow road have been laid in red metal.

Cycling on footpaths: Warnings have been issued to some 55 cyclists, but as a considerable number are still cycling on the paths, all future offenders will be prosecuted. General: A number of seats will bo placed in the domain next week. During the month 3,760,000 gallons of water were pumped, 3,732,000 gallons were consumed, leaving a surplus of 34,000 gallons. Five connections were made to the board’s drainage system. In view of the due date for the next monthly meeting being Good Friday April 14, it was decided to put the meeting forward to April 7.

Accounts totalling £.1114 10/2 were passed for payment.
