THE RIVERS BOARD

ATTITUDE OF THE CHAIRMAN. . SUPPORTED AT TARADALE. Members of the Taradale Towm Board declared themselves to be wholly in sympathy with the stand taken by the chairman of the Hawke’s Bay Rivers Boari, Mr W. G. Jarvis, in refusing to vacate the chair at the board’s last meeting when the majority of members recorded a vote of no-coutidonce in him. The matter was discussed at the monthly meeting of the Taradale Town Board last evening, when the following resolution was carried unanimously:—“That this board congratulates the chairman of the Hawke’s Bay Rivers Board on the stand he took at the last meeting in not vacating the chair. This board considers that the action <rf certain members in moving a vote of no-confi-Jence in the chairman was not a personal matter, but a move to hold up the work of diverting the river. This diversion scheme has the approval of every local body in the district and also the approval of the Government engineers and the Public Works Department.. It is a work that will provide safety from flood to hosts of settlers. Besides this the Government has offered 50 per cent of the cost over and above what the Unemployment Board would allow. The Rivers Board practically has a mandate to carry out the work immediately, and the Taradale Town Board considers that any attempt to harass or hinder the work in any way would be disastrous.”

In moving the resolution, the chairman of the board, Mr J. Williamson, stated that the board had been in sympathy with Mr Jarvis all along, “I think we should still uphold that, sympathy,” he added. “The question of the diversion of the river concerns the whole district, and we feel that it is a matter of the greatest urgency that the work be carried out immediately," His motion was seconded by Mr C. H. Williams, who said that he heartily endorsed all that the chairman had said.
