HASTINGS HIGH SCHOOL

WORK OF UPPER FORMS. HAMPERED BY LACK OF BOOKS. At last night’s meeting of the Hastings High behoof Board of Governors, the principal stated that the school has this year an unusually large proportion of pupils in the upper forms. Groups or senior pupils are preparing to sit lor a section of the B.A. or LL.B, degree, and for accountancy examinations. Every effort is being made by the teaching staff to assist these pupils to qualify towards the requirements of their intended professions, although the courses being taken by them arc really of university standard and beyond the normal scope of a secondary school. Progress is being much hampered, however, through the lack of books—not only the actual text-books, which are expensive and rather difficult to obtain, but also books of reference and classics iu literature. Members of the board expressed serious concern in the matter, and, although the board's income has recently been so much reduced as to render it difficult to maintain even the essential services of the school, a grant was authorised for the purchase of a number of textbooks for loan to senior pupils. The chairman (Mr 11. Holderncss) expressed the opinion that there must be people in Hastings who have on their shelves many of the books of which the school is in need, and which they would gladly hand over to the school if that need were known to them. Standard authors in English, Latin and French, works on literature and history, and an encyclopaedia would be especially welcome. They could be left at the secretary’s office or the principal would arrange for them to be called for. The gift of 14 volumes has already been re ceived from Mr J. A. Fraser.
