WAR DEBTS TO U.S.
SCALING DOWN URGED ENFORCEMENT ON RECOVERY. NEWSPAPER VIEWPOINT. New York, Dec. 28. The strongest article from an American source on war debts appears in .Saturday’s * ‘ Evening Post, ’ ’ occupying nearly the whole of the editorial page, urging that the debt be scaled down to meet the emergency existing now, but that it be enforced at the full rate when the nations recover. “The Post” agrees with the Hearst and other Press services that Britain alone among the debtors deserves consideration. The article bitterly condemns the French default, and points out that ever since 1914 there had been a campaign in Europe directed against the United States to get them into the war, keep them in a fever heat during the war, and then dodge paying for the war. The Ottawa Conference had aimed at keeping America out of British Empire markets.
