NAPIER HARBOUR BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING HELD. VARIOUS MINOR MATTERS. The monthly meeting of the Napier Harbour Board was held to-day. Present: Messrs. T. M. Geddis (chairman), J. I. Cato, J. Barker, P. Higgins, R. Baker, J. C. Bryant, J. C. Bryant, G. O. Lowe, H. R. Peacock, T. L. Gordon, E. J. Herrick, R. McLean, A. E. Jull, M.P., and L. Stephenson. The Napier Waterside Workers’ Union wrote regarding lightering from the Breakwater. It was said that men on barges or lighters arriving from the roadstead late at night found it difficult to land on the wharf. The union considered the practice of using fender piles and a length of rope was a dangerous one, and suggested that a light and a fixed ladder at each landing chute would minimise the danger.— The matter was left in the hands of the works committee, with the recommendation that as the cost was low the work be done. A letter was read from Mr. G. F. Clapeott, engineer, concerning a report on reclamation in Invercargill. The writer said he was returning; South, and would be pleased to furnish the Napier Harbour Board with information regarding the nature and extent of the reclamation areas in Invercargill, and to make a close inspection of the site. Subsequently a report, accompanied by photographs, was furnished through the eombined agency of Mr. J. C. Bryant and Mr. Clapeott, whose work met with the approval and thanks of the board.

A request that the wharfage rate on carbonate of lime be made the same as for other artificial manures was referred to the by-laws committee with power to act.
