ORCHARD COMPETITION

M.S. A. and p. society A WIN FOR J. p. BOYLE The orchard competition which takes place in connection with the Hawke's Bay Agriculture and Pastoral Society show has now been decided. Hus competition is open to orchardists in the Hawke’s Bay gazetted fruit area and Poukawa settlement. The judge was the orchard instructor, with an associate, and judging was done in the first week in December lor those on the west side of the railway line and the second week in December for those on the east side of the railway line. There must be five competitors or ho competition, but the necessary number was obtained. Points to count as follows: —Cultivation and tilt of orchard, 25; vigour, growth and foliage of trees, 20, freedom from disease of orchard trees, 25; thinning of fruit, 20; care of orchard, implements and machinery, 10; total, 100.

The areas were two acres aud over. Ihe three prizes are provided by the Hawke’s Bay i'ruitgrowats’ Association, and the society, and in addition to the cash prizes, the Hawke’s Bay Fruitgrowers’ Association’s silver bowl, value £lO 10/- is offered in this class This trophy is to be in competition tor seven years, the competitor who has the most wins at the end of the period to be the winner. Winners of the cup have been:—l927, F. A. VY. Frost, 94} points; 1928, T. Mitcueil, 94} points; 1929, F. A. W. Frost, 93 points; 1930, J. P. Boyle, 91 points. Ihe judges this year, Messrs A. Tomlinson and A. R. Grainger, made their awards as follows, the points being in rotation in accordance with the paiticulars stated above:—J. P. Boyle, 25, 24J, 20, 10, total 98} points 1; F A. Frost, 24}, 18, 23}, 19}, 9}, total, 95 points 2; R. Wyllie, 24, 19, 20, 20, 9, total 92 points three; A. Ihornburrow, 23, 17, 21, 18, 9, total 88 points. 4; F. Johnson, 23, 17, 21, 17, B, total 80 points, 5. j This makes Mr J P. Boyle’s sefond win, so that he and Mr F A. W. Host have now two wm» each for the <mp.
