INTER CLUB CONTEST "HERALD” SHIELD TO NAPIER. 76 POINTS TO GISBORNE’S 61. The contest for the “Hawke’s Bay Herald” Shield, for competition between the Napier and Gisborne Amateur Athletic Clubs, resulted in the trophy being wrested by Napier from Gisborne, the holders, by 76 points to 64. The Shield events comprised 16, Gisborne securing six and Napier ten. The winners took first places in the 440, 880, one-mile flat, half-mile cycle, 120 yards hurdles, high jump, broad jump, hop, step and jump, shot putt and relay. Gisborne were successful in the 100 yards, 220 yards, one-mile cycle, three-mile cycle, pole vault and discus. The weather was fine and the attendance good. In the evening the visitors were entertained at a dance and the trophy handed over by the Mayor (Mr D. W. Coleman, M.P.). The interchange of visits between Napier and Gisborne in various branches have always been exceedingly pleasant, the wonderful hospitality of the Gisborne people and the fine sportsmanship of their footballers, athletes, cricketers, bowlers, etc., making a visit to the East Coast capital one to be looked forward to with very great pleasure, while Napier, on its part, always endeavours by similar hospitality and sportsmanship to show its appreciation of the splendid reception which is always accorded at Gisborne. The contest for the shield came off on Saturday, and with the inclusion of a number of handicap events an exceptionally strong programme was presented to the large crowd who attended. The shield competition was close right np to the finish, for with two events to be decided Gisborne had n lead of two points, but Napier scored the whole nine points for the long jump and won the relay event, adding five more points, eventually finishing up 12 points ahead, and .regaining the trophy, which they had lost to the Gis borne club on the occasion of their las' visit SHIELD RESULTS. Bird, Cornford, Preston, McLean) 1. NOTABLE HIGH JUMP. A noteworthy performance was that of E. Phillips, who, in addition to tieing with his older brother in tho long jump, won the high jump with the fine jump of sft 7in. At each inch from 5 feet upwards, Phillips missed at his first try, but got over at his second, while Sheridan of Gisborne, was jumping faultlessly. However, after Phillips had cleared the bar at sft 7in., Sheridan failed to do so and had to take second place. R. Steere won the 100 yards handicap from the 5 yards mark. The joint managers of the Napier team, messrs A. Annan and C. White, desire to express the team’s heartfelt thanks to all those who made their stay in Gisborne so exceedingly pleasant.
