Park Island Home Site.

The site of the buildings which prior to the earthquake constituted the Old People’s Home at Parke Island is now very densely overgrown with tall weeds which almost totally cover the foundations of the various wards as they were left after salvage and demolition work had been completed soon after the earthquake. At one end of the area quite a prolific crop of poppies has sprung up and they make an effective splash of colour when seen through the green weeds. The Community Grave.

The erection of the memorial on the community grave at Parke Island where the majority of the Napier earthquake victims are buried is proceeding satisfactorily and already a good deal of the work has been accomplished. The obelisk in the centre of the grave has been completed and is finished off effectively in plaster in tints of yellow ranging from a fairly deep to light. A limestone wall finished with a coping of yellow cement, has been erected round the grave, the surface of which has been made level, and the contractors at the present time arc engaged upon the putting into place of the marble tablets bearing the name* of the victim*.
