V.R.C. DERBY

WON BY LIBERAL MAORILANDER SECOND. PETER PAN’S MELBOURNE STAKES. Melbourne, Oct. 30. The weather was fine and there was a big attendance, including a number of New Zealanders, for the first day of the Victoria Racing Club’s spring meeting. Protea had a comfortable win in the Wakeful Stakes. El Maros finished fast and should win a race at the meeting. Protea cost 60 guineas as a yearling and has won many races. Rabsonia, ridden by A. Knox, led always in the Maribyrnong Plate. The winner’s dam, Steel Wings, is a sister to the New Zealander Biplane. The New Zealanders Prestige and Limarch failed to show up.

Peter Pan enhanced his Cup prospects with a strong finishing run in the Stakes. Rogilla and Middle Watch made good efforts. Peter Jacjkson showed improvement. Lough Neagh was fair, but Compris proved a disappointment. Liberal had a brilliant win in the Derby after being interfered with as a result of Kuvera falling in the straight entrance. Gaine Carrington ran a great race, but tired over the last bit. Liberal’s rider, Munro, has won the Melbourne Cup. Liberal’s sire is Windbag. Liberal is engaged in the Cup. He was bred by the owner, A. G. Hunter, and the trainer is Fred Foulsham, who had Mollison. Denis Boy ran a good Cup trial in the Cantala. He finished a fast second to Dermid in the same event last year. The trainer, McGrath, won the Cantala previously with Amounis twice. The rider, Jones, won on Vaals. Sectional times:—Melbourne Stakes; Last four 49J, last six 1.151. Derby: First four 51j, .last four 51 i, last six 1.17 J. Cantala: Last four 48, last six 1.13}.

Stakes values were: Derby £2BOO, Maribyrnong £lO5O, Cantala £lO5O, Melbourne Stakes £525, Wakeful £356, Hotham £3OO. McCarten had a fail on Kuvera in the Derby, but escaped injury. A rank outsider, Roc, won the Hotham comfortably. He is not engaged in the Cup. He is trained by the veteran Jim Scobie and- bred by the owner, E. E. D. Clarke. The Cup candidate Yarramba finished strongly. W. Dunean rides Peter Pan in the Melbourne Cup. Denis Boy has been re-handicapped three pounds in the Melbourne Cup and is now 9.2. Libera 1 carries four pounds extra, now 7.6 Denis Boy is now top weight. Rulanut is an acceptor in Tuesday’s Highweight. Dilly and Tessie in Mimosa Stakes, and Rulanut and Actaeon in the Yan Yean Stakes. Turbine was galloped on in the Derby and injured a hock. Havering was fourth and Manawhenua eleventh. Time, 2.34. SOME COMMENT. It was not New Zealand’s “day out’’ at Kandwick on Saturday, still there is some consolation in that two from this quarter were good enough to act as runmrs-up in the big set-weight events. Gaine Carrington went down before a proved good one in the Windbag colt Liberal, who has three urevious three-year-old successes to his credit, the latest being the Caulfield .Guineas. It is to be noted that both first and third horses are by Austra-lian-bred sires.

Hapsonia’s win in the Maribyrnong Plate would probably come as something of at least a mild surprise, as memory does not recall him as having previously proved successful, his best performance seeming to have been a fai rthird in the Gwyhne Nursery at Caulfield a fortnight hack. As will be seen above, Blixton, who finished within half a length of him, hails from the Dominion. His dam. Receipt, is a mare by Paper Money from Satisfaction, whose pedigree runs back, through the “Karamu” (Hastings) bred Birkenhead mare Satisfaire, to Hammock, the founder of a great winning family. The places in the Melbourne Stakes, regarded as giving a line to Melbourne Cup chances, were filled by horses who are already well up in the betting for to-morrow’s big handicap event. Peter Pan’s victory will no doubt confirm him in his place at the top of the quotations, unless displaced by the Derby winner, who had three lengths to spare at the end of his 12-furlong race on Saturday. The two-mile event promises a pretty open run among those of exposed form, and there is, of course, always the chance of some light-weight saved up for it upsetting calculations based on public form. MELBOURNE CUP RIDERS Melbourne, Oct. 31. H. E. Skidmore rides Liberal, A. Knox Yarramba, E. Baxter Shadow King and W. Duncan Peter Pan in the Melbourne Cup. TO-MORROW’S GREAT EVENT. A feature in the list of acceptances is the number of three-year-olds. The following nine have been left in; Peter Pan, by Pantheon, 7.6; Gaine Carrington, by Hunting Song, 7.6; Ruach, by Drake, 7.3; Liberal, by Windbag, 7.3; Oro, by Roger di Busli, 7.2; Oratory, by Verbius, 7.2; The Dawn Patrol, by The Night Patrol, 7.0; Eastern Chief, by Eastern Monarch, 6.13; Streperus, by Verbius, 6.12. The victory registered by Peter Pan in the A.J.C. Derby, followed by his Melbourne Stakes win on Saturday, seems to place him well in advance of those he encountered at Bandwick this n onth. Oro was considered to have improved in the interval and in some quarters was preferred to Peter Pan, but unless his failure on Saturday was due to Kuvera's fall, he will probably have gone out of favour. Victoria’s chief hope is, of course, the Derby winner, Liberal, who also won the Caulfield Guineas by a display of true grit. Gaine Carrington failed badly in the the A.J.C. Derby, when much was expected of him, but good reasons are advanced for his failure. Still, he seems to have been beaten by the Derby distance on Saturday, and this does not augur well for him over half a mile further.

The four-year-old division may be expected to furnish the chief fancies. Middle Watch, a son of The Night Patrol, who with 8.11 has an impost 31b less than weight-for-age, was long the actual favourite. At three years old he won the V.R.C. St. Leger and A.J.C. St Leger, and this season again he has raced well. Peter Jackson failed so badly in the races he contested in New South Wales as to create the impression that he is over-estimated in being aclled upon to carry 8.11. Lough Neagh, who has the handy burden of 7.13, appears to be well entitled to the high esteem in which he is held, for he shone as a true stayer when he won the Randwick Plate, two miles, three weeks ago, and it is very strongly contended that he is well equipped to battle his way in a big field. White Nose 7.11 and Shadow King 8.12, who finished first and second in last year’s Melbourne Cup, are engaged again. When White Nose scored last year he carried only 6.12, while Shadow King carried 8.7.
