ASHLEY CLINTON BRANCH From Our Own Correspondent The Ashley Clinton Women’s Institute held a large and enthusiastic meeting on Thursday. In the absence of Mrs Hugh White, Mrs Waldin presided. The meeting commenced with the institute song. After the business had been gone through Mrs Jackson displayed her most beautiful rugs, afterwards demonstrating how to make them. Keen interest was taken in this and her demonstration was much appreciated. Mrs Jackson was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. A competition, best vase of flowers, judged by Mrs Jackson, was won as follows: Miss E. Jack 1, Miss J. Jack 2, Mrs F. Severinsen 3. Potatoes, kindly donated by Mrs Hugh White, were distributed among members, who are to plant them and compete for the heaviest yield by a given date. A dainty afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs Person and Mrs Howse, and the meeting closed with the National Anthem. OTANE BRANCH At the monthly meeting of the Otano Women’s Institute last week, Mrs R. H. Tod, president, on behalf of the members, presented Mrs Heeney with a parting gift in memory of her association with the Otane branch during her stay here, and wished her every success in her future surroundings. In acknowledging the presentation Mrs Heeney thanked Mrs Tod and friends for their thoughtful gift and expressed her regret at having to say good-bye. The Otane members are reminded that they are invited to the Waipukurau birthday party on November 15, at the Masonic Hall. ARGYLL BRANCH The Argyll Women’s Institute met on Thursday, Mrs Hudson (president) presiding over an attendance of twelve members and two visitors. The hostesses for an enjoyable afternoon were Miss Hudson, Miss Little and Miss Nietschke. HANDICRAFT EXHIBITION Women’s Institute handicrafts always form a centre of attraction at local shows, and in view of the widespread interest displayed in this branch of institute activities, the Dominion Federation has decided to hold an exhibition in Wellington on November 23 and 24, which Her Excellency, Lady Bledisloe has graciously consented, to open. The exhibition will be the largest and most comprehensive one yet staged by the New Zealand organisation and will include all forms of handicrafts from all parts g>f the Dominion. A special feature will be examples of i the many uses to which primary products can be put by using simple home ! methods and implements, and will ir r ’ elude home-eured skins, home-spun wool and home-made dyes from native plants. In addition to their other many and varied handicrafts, the institutes are keenly interested in the revival and encouragement of old and beautiful crafts which have more or less fallen into disuse. Examplcf of these will bo on view and demonstrations of various kinds will be in progress throughout the exhibition. The whole display will prove that W.I. stands for Wide Interests as well as Women’s Institutes.
