SATURDAY’S GAMES IN H.B. HASTINGS AND NAPIER COMPETITIONS CONTINUED. FIRST INNINGS VICTORIES IN BOTH CENTRES. The opening series of matches in the Hastings competition were completed on Saturday when two three-point victories were recorded. At Nelson Park, Hastings defeated Tomoana by 44 runs on the first innings, and at Cornwall Park Old Boys succeeded m likewise by 42 runs against Whakatu who narrowly failed completely turning the tables, time being called with them wanting only three runs to secure an outright win. HASTINGS 0.8. v. WHAKATU In reply to Hastings Old Boys score of 135 the overnight tally of 82 for seven wickets was increased to 93 by Whakatu who then dismissed Old Boys for the low total of 87, Graham again heading the list with 28 and Bartie next w J th 19. Requiring 129 to completely turn the tables Whakatu made a great bid for victory and when time wag called they required but two to draw and the last wicket to fall, consequently Old Boys secured the honours on the first innings aggregates. In reply Fruitgrowers compiled 60 (Woon 28, Crombie 12; Newling five for 34). Old Boys gained a three point victory by 23 runs. GAMES AT NAPIER. WINS FOR ST. JOHN’S AND T.C.0.8. The opening series of games at Napier were also completed, both results resting on the first innings counts. St. John’s defeated United by a substantial margin, and Technical Old Boys accounted for their rivals, High School Old Boys. In both games

the losers were compelled to follow-on, but both sides managed to bat out time and avert complete defeat. SENIOR GRADE. ST. JOHN’S v. UNITED A collapse on the part of United in their first innings gave St. John’s a three-point victory on the first innings by 221 runs. The latter team continued their first innings on Saturday afternoon, when the last wicket partnership between Cane and Hunter yielded a further 27 runs before Captain Finlayson declared, the team having compiled 305. Excellent batting performances were given by both Cane and Hunter, the former knocking up 60 (not out), including five fours, and the latter 47 (not out), with six fours. United started off badly in their first innings, the first five wickets falling for 11 runs. The innings closed for the moderate total of 84, J. Stevens, with 46 not out, being the most successful batsman. Brown and Chadwick took most of the wickets, the former securing five for 16 and the latter four for 12. United followed on and when stumps were drawn five wickets were down for 102. Messrs. S. Warwick and J. J. O’Brien acted as umpires. The following are the detailed scores: — s ST. After having placed themselves in a comfortable position by scoring 276 in their first innings, Technical 0.8. obtained a first innings victory against H. 5.0.8., whose first knock yielded 175 runs. The latter team were doing better when they followed on, one wieket having fallen for 149 runs when stumps were drawn. The most creditable batting performance of the day was given by R. United B. had a lead of 16 over their opponents after the first innings. St. John’s made 178 in their second knock, King gaining top score with 59. White made 42, Thorne-George 14, and Asher 11. For United B. Hawthorne captured five wickets for 66, Barton three for nine and Champion one for 26. The latter team made up the deficiency with three wickets in hand, eight wickets having fallen for 168 Hawthorne made 52, Stephenson 24. Wordsworth 17. F. N. Harvey 39 (not. out) and Wyllie 10. 49), King (one for 42) and ThorneGeorge (one for 24). TECHNICAL 0.8. v. TECHNICAL COLTS. Technical Colts gained a four-pointer against Technical 0.8. with five wickets to spare. Old Boys’ batted first and made 98, the colts replying with 96. In their socnd innings, Old Boys made 123 (Sinclair 42 not out, Atkinson 27, Pirie 20 and Rees 13). For the colts Bowman took one wicket for 17, A. Elliott three for 32, Horsefield one for 17, Falvey two for nine and Kronk three for 15. In the replying innings the colts passed Technical’s total at a cost of s ix wickets. Elliott and Bowman remained undefeated at 39 and 25 respectively, while Doherty made 15, Horsefield 12 and Dowerick 11. The latter had first use of the wickets and made 122, Swailes’ replying with 177 (Swails 67, Mathews 25, Girvan 21, Willig 18 and Blackledge 17). For Scinde, Boland took four wickets for 37, Hughes four for 53, Forsyth one for 11 and Harris one for 22.
