THE V.R.C. MEETING
DERBY RUN TO-DAY. MELBOURNE CUP TUESDAY. Following the Caulfield Cup meeting, tho Victorian spring racing carnival will be continued at Flemington to-day by the opening of the Victoria Racing Club’s Melbourne Cup fixture extending over four days. This afternoon’s star event is the Derby, for which an even dozen have been loft in after payment of final forfeits, all colts carrying Bst. 101 b. Among these the Dominion has a single representative in the Taranaki owned Hunting SongLeft colt Gaine Carrington, When our latest Australian mail left Sydney tho Roger de Busli colt Oro,
was quoted as favourite, with Gain* Carrington and the Windbag colt Liberal sharing second favouritism. However, later cable advice* point to the New Zealand candidate M haying since been promoted to a place by himself on the top line. Next to these three in the newspaper lists were Top Hole and Btreperus, followed by EaaU ern Chief and Oratory. Gaine Carrington, it will be romem* bered, was made a good course favour* ite for the A.J.C. Derby four weeke ago, but finished a long way back. Thia poor performance was, however, attributed by his rider to his having got his tongue over the bit. On the third day at Bandwick he' went out second favourite for the w.f.a. Craven Plate, li mile, but a close third behind Chatham and Veilmond was the best he could do. He WM produced again on the concluding day of the fixturn to finish first in the Clibborn Stakes, one mile, for three-year-olds. However, as a penalty for **interference,” he was put back into second place, first money being awarded to Tingabba, whom he had beaten by three-quarter* of a length. There were not a few who disagreed with this decision and, generally speaking, the Hunting Bong colt was regarded as having had anything but good luck with him at Bandwick. This impression, backed no doubt by good track work since being taken to Melbourne and by the fact that Flemington is a left-hand course, will account for hi* reported place in tba pre-post betting. In any event, the issue would scorn to be a fairly open one, with at least a fair chance of the Winner’* share of the 4,000 bovs. added money, along with the substantial sweepstake*, coming over thia way.
