MOTORISTS’ ESCAPE
SOMERSAULT OF CAR. VEHICLE BADLY DAMAGED. Now Plymouth, Oct. 97. Two men had a miraculous escape from death last evening when a motorcar in which they were driving overturned and pinned them beneath it. They escaped w'th minor injuries. The acCidetSt occurred at the intersection of Dawson and Vivian streets. The car skidded into the kerb and turned a somersault, landing with its wheels in the air against a stone wall. The windscreen was smashed, the hood crumpled level with the top of the body, and the steering-wheel forced into the body of the car. The vehicle was driven by Mr L. J. Tracey, of Huinga, with Mr A. R. Simmons, of Westown, as a passenger. With all this damage it seemed impossible that the two occupants should escape uninjured, yet they suffered only a few cuts about the hands from flying glass. The radiator was buckled and the mudguards were crumpled, while one headlight was smashed and the petrol, tank was punctured. The intersection is a particularly dangerous one, and near-by residents hear the skidding of cars at all hours of the dav and night. Dawson street carries a large volume of traffic, as it is the main route to Frankley road, and for much of the Westown and hospital traffic.
