REGIMENTAL BOXING

TOURNAMENT AT WAIPUKURAU | ' GISBORNE MEN DO WELL (Special Representative.) The Hawke’s Bay Regimental boxing championships were held in the Waipukurau Municipal Theatre last evening, there being a very large attendance of soldiers and the general public. The Gisborne trainees were much in the ascendancy, winning most of the bouts, which, in a way, retarded the success of the evening, as many of those drawn in the semi-finals withdrew in favour of their home fancy. The general arrangements were very good, and no fault could be found with the verdicts given. The referee was Mr I. A. Swinburn and the judges were Major McGaffin and Mr A. C. Russell, whilst Staff-Sergeant Stitchbury carried out the duties of announcer. Results were:— Lightweight.— Cowan (Gisborne) beat Merrick (Masterton); Kaine (Gisborne) beat Martin (Masterton); Fanning (Gisborne) beat Cheer (Hastings). Most of the Gisborne contestants withdrew, the final being fought between Cowan (Gisborne) and McMahan (Gisborne), the match resulting in a draw. Welterweight.— Bull (Gisborne) beat Hulford (Napier); Smith (Gisborne) beat Martin (Gisborne). Semi-final: Bull beat Kana (Gisborne). Final: Smith (Gisborne) beat Bull (Gisborne). Middleweight Burton (Hastings) beat Horn (Gisborne).
