SEQUEL TO POLICE RAID
COMMON GAMINC HOUSE. CHINESE FINED £lOO. Auckland, Oct. 13. Six men who were arrested on Wednesday in a Chinese fruit shop in Pitt street appeared in the Police Court charged with being found without lawful excuse in a common gaming house, while a seventh, Ah Hoy, aged 35, was charged with keeping the premises as a common gaming house. . Referring to Hoy, the Magistrate (Mr F. K. Hunt) said: "Only last week there was a similar case, and these people are simply laughing at the law. I wiU deal with him as I do with bookmakers. ” The accused was fined £lOO. in default three months’ imprisonment. "He will be handy in the laundry,’’ said Detective-Sergeant Kelly in reply to remarks by counsel that the accused eould not possibly pay the fine. With the exception of one man, who was discharged, each of the other accused found on the premises was fined £2 and costs.
