CROQUET
THE NELSON PARK CLUB. OPENING OF THE SEASON. The official opening of the Nelson Park Croquet Club’s season took place on Wednesday afternoon. The Mayor (Mr J. Vigor Brown), who performed the opening ceremony, congratulated the club upon maintaining such a strong membership. It spoke well for the enthusiasm of members, and he was glad to see the game retain its popularity. In spite of what Napier had gone through it. was cheering to see that the ladies still kept on smiling and found time for pleasant recreation. He complimented the grounds staff upon the splendid condition of the playing lawns. It was a great credit to them He was pleased to see so many visitors present, players having come from Waipukurau, Hastings and other, places. The fraternal interchange of visits in all kinds of sport was a grand thing, and did much to break down those barriers which business rivalry or other causes, was apt to set up. He hoped the club would have even a more prosperous season than the last, and that some of the Napier plavers would return the visits made to them that day.
